The problem of microplastics, which studies show can enter the bodies of fish, has become widely recognized, but one of the biggest threats to the health of our marine ecosystem is fishing nets that are lost or abandoned.
Ghost gear discharged in large quantities remains in the ocean without decomposition forever, causing damage to sea turtles, fish, seabirds and various marine life.
Bureo®, a company based in Oxnard, California, and Talcahuano, Chile, is addressing this issue by repurposing end-of-life fishing nets. Working directly with fishing communities around the world, they collect, sort, clean, and shred discarded nets to create NetPlus® material, a 100% recycled alternative to virgin plastics.
At Ron Herman, we support Bureo®’s efforts and, through the use of NetPlus®, strive to act with nature in mind while serving as a bridge that connects people to a more sustainable future. Beginning with our Fall/Winter 2024 collection, we have partnered with Bureo® to donate 10% of the NetPlus® material cost used in our products. These contributions support Ellange, a Japan-based company engaged in the collection and recycling of discarded fishing nets, and we are committed to continuing this initiative.
